Multilateral Conventions

 

United Nations Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards (1958)
Known as the New York Convention, this is one of the main instruments for the recognition and enforcement of international arbitral awards. Both Italy and Algeria are parties to the Convention (Italy since 1969, Algeria since 1988). The treaty encourages the use of arbitration as a preferred method for resolving international commercial disputes and ensures the enforceability of arbitral awards between the two legal systems.

Multilateral Convention to Implement Tax Treaty Related Measures to Prevent Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS, 2017)
Italy is a party to this OECD-led multilateral convention aimed at improving the effectiveness of tax treaties in combating tax avoidance. Algeria signed the convention in June 2024, becoming the 103rd signatory. The convention allows for simultaneous amendments to numerous existing bilateral treaties, including those between Italy and Algeria, by introducing minimum standards and advanced provisions on treaty abuse, mutual agreement procedures, and arbitration.

International Agreement on Olive Oil and Table Olives (2015)
Both Italy and Algeria are members of the International Olive Council, which regulates quality standards and promotes technical and commercial cooperation in the olive oil sector. This agreement promotes regulatory harmonization and product traceability and is a key instrument for exports and development of the olive industry in Mediterranean countries.

Customs Convention on the International Transport of Goods under Cover of TIR Carnets (TIR Convention)
Italy and Algeria are both parties to this convention, which simplifies customs procedures for international road transport. It enables the transit of goods with a single customs document, enhancing logistical efficiency, security, and speed in commercial transport between the two countries and across the broader Eurasian network.

Association Agreement between Algeria and the European Union (2002)
Signed in Algiers and ratified in 2005, this agreement regulates commercial, political, and cooperative relations between Algeria and the EU. As an EU Member State, Italy fully participates in the agreement, which provides for progressive trade liberalization, structured political dialogue, and technical and financial cooperation programs aimed at supporting Algeria’s integration into the Euro-Mediterranean area.
